Genevieve Barr's Silence challenge
If you watched The Silence last night, you may agree that Genevive Barr was mesmerising as a deaf girl who witnesses a murder.
Her character, 18 year-old Amelia wears a cochlear implant, but Genevive, 24, has revealed that she had to reply on lip reading to play the part, as she couldn't wear her hearing aid on set.
The actress was born deaf and relies on two hearing aids in order to hear.
She admitted: "There were so many difficult things - I couldn't wear my hearing aid on set because Amelia had a cochlear implant, so I was in a studio with 60 crew, a number of cast and extras, having to work out what was going on and I had to rely completely on lip reading.
"But that was just one challenge and I suppose I've faced so many challenges in my life before that I've come to enjoy a challenge now.
"And there was a huge emotional challenge as well, going from having a raging argument in one scene to a very emotional, tearful scene, to a very happy scene, so the emotional journey is quite mentally exhausting. But it was a challenge I relished and enjoyed every day."
Catch part two of The Silence tonight at 9pm on BBC1.
Read our interview with Amelia's best friend Izzy, here. Izzy is played by Rebecca Dunne who has a cochlear implant.

I did watch this program but disagree with a few things.. firstly I can honestly say ive never met a deaf person like this ..it was totally unrealistic!
Deaf people love gossip and a murder would be big news in the deaf world.
Deaf all her life and suddenly being able to hear what her uncle was saying behind her back!!.. dont make me laugh.
The only scene I agree with was the toilet scene... its a shame but most deaf girls are that way.

I'm enjoying this drama so far, and intend on watching it to the end.

Dave, could you elaborate please? What do you mean by "most deaf girls are like this"? I am hoping you aren't being crass. And what makes you think that we are all incapable of keeping something to ourselves?

I'm going to guess that Dave isn't deaf, particularly by the way he seems to enjoy generalising to such a point that it is beyond ridiculous! What gives him the right to dream up his own little stereotype exactly? This has to be one of the most appauling statements I've ever come across - here I am refering to when he referred to the scene in the toilet.
You should be ashamed of yourself, Dave.

I would like to say I really enjoyed watching the drama but it was a bad ending as it could have been better. Such as, catching the 2 baddies from the drugs squad, showing Jim getting better and what happens about Jim's job etc.

I've just watched the final part and have to say it's one of the best dramas I've watched in a long time. A gripping storyline along with what I imagine to be a really realistic account of a deaf teen's struggle to adapt to becoming part if the hearing world.
I really enjoyed it and think Genevieve Barr played the part beautifully, giving true insight into the challenges that deaf people often face due to a general lack of understanding!
And Dave, let's not limit the toilet scene to deaf girls - bet you'd struggle to find anyone that had a normal teen life that hasn't been there before!

I don't agree with Dave's comment. If he said it in a different way like for example, "most girls of her age can be like that, so it portrays that" instead of his comment he said, then I don't think this would be as offending. Dave's comment is making it sound like deaf girls are all like it. When they are not!

I really loved this programme. It was a really good insight for me as a (not sure how to term my self) a 'hearer' (?) what it must be like to live in a world of silence. The pros and cons, as with all things life there are always good and bad points. I think anyway!
Generalisations are always dangerous, and particularly over senstive issues!
Anyway, just wanted to say how much I enjoyed The Silence, and what a valuable insight and education it is to those of us who take hearing, speaking and a full use of our bodies for granted.

One of my closest friends is deaf. He has to wear two aids and often lips reads as well (especially to "hear" his kids as sometimes he misses their voices).
It's hard for any hearing person to judge what it is like to be deaf. My best friend teaches BSL and Makaton to special needs kids - we often use the signs for drink and toilet when we are out clubbing because its the only way to communicate sometimes!

It was a compelling drama from start to finish. would love to see another series to to tie the loose ends up but overall 5/5. i thought Genevieve Barr was fantastic considering she's never acted on TV before and hopefully we see her more on TV.
well done to all the cast on a great drama!

I thought the last episode was well done,
But it could have had a real ending.
Not saying it wasn't good,
But could have been better

Hi..
Sorry if I offended anyone, it was not my intention.
Yes I am deaf and have been most of my life, I also mixed with the deaf world through my teens and early adult life.. I left that world behind because of the trouble deaf people were making.
I won't go into details but the deaf girls that I knew did have relations with friends of friends..from my point of view they seemed to like putting it about.
As for the silence program... it could have been better... maybe next time they should get a deaf director in?? better from a deaf persons point of view. It will be a long time before the bbc make another one methinks!

I thoroughly enjoy the programme. The acting by all
was amazing especially Genevieve. What an actress.
The only downer I have was the ending it left me thinking that the final episode would be the following night and was quite disappointed. I find this a lot in these one off series the end ruin it all. Please can they not make the extra effort and finish it off as it spoilt the programme. Silence Though was fantastic minus two stars for the ending. Well done.

I haven't got a great deal of experience of deafness ...but I am totally gripped by this series it has certainly made me think much more about the world around me. The combination some excellent filming and use of sound really brings this drama to life. Factual or not, it is ceratinly worth watching.

As a hearing person, who has little or no contact with anyone deaf, I found this drama totally enthralling. Genevieve Barr was fabulous in her role, and I particularly liked the way the soundtrack (best listened to on headphones) tried to give an impression of what someone with an implant hears and has to make sense of.

I love this progamme and i'm not a person for this type of drama (as i am 11 yrs old)! let alone i love csi dramas! however as each night i watched it, it became more intresting for me. I think it is such a shame it was only a four night drama! i hope that later on it will come on again but will last longer thatn only four days!

Good for her acting, but she was just a difficult angry teenager, who went about being reckless. Her deafness aside, she was a really annoying character, but typical for a selfish teenage.

"I did watch this program but disagree with a few things.. firstly I can honestly say ive never met a deaf person like this ..it was totally unrealistic!

Erm. You're so stupid. I'm deaf but I'm more in the hearing world. I do have deaf friends, but you couldn't possibly imagine what it's like to witness a murder. For God's sake. I would keep quiet about something like that.
I hate how you're so bloody prejudice. And stupid.
"Deaf all her life and suddenly being able to hear what her uncle was saying behind her back!!.. dont make me laugh."
Um. I've been deaf all my life and when I got the implant I could hear so much more.
Do you have a cochlea implant?
Because I do, and from the first day it was activated I could hear so much more, I heard sweet wrappers crackling for the first time and I could hear people better and behind me too.
So don't you dare say stuff you don't really know about.
"The only scene I agree with was the toilet scene... its a shame but most deaf girls are that way."
Again. F### off.
