Jacqui Smith challenges Parliament to improve access for deaf constituents

jacqui smith.jpg Jacqui Smith MP has raised the issue of access to Parliament for disabled people on the floor of Parliament. Jacqui was concerned that when she tried to arrange for Redditch Deaf Club to visit Parliament she was told that there was nobody who could provide sign language and only part of the route had a hearing loop.

Jacqui says, ‘I don’t think this is good enough. I want all of my constituents regardless of disability to be able to tour Parliament.’

After asking her question to the House of Commons Commission during Thursday’s business, Jacqui said, ‘I received a reasonably encouraging answer and have now been invited to talk to the Parliamentary authorities about our experience and how we can improve things. I’ll be taking up that opportunity early next week.’
