In the upcoming romantic dance film Love N’ Dancing, screenwriter and actor Tom Malloy cast himself as a former swing dance champion who is deaf.

In a recent interview with TheStarScoop.com, Tom, who plays the character Jake, explained that he decided to make his leading man hearing impaired after seeing a deaf man win a swing competition. He said, “There are multiple west coast swing dancers that are and feel the beat of the music. That’s where the story came from.”

Jake is a west coast swing dancer who became deaf at the age of 16 in a swimming pool, and uses it as a crutch. Tom explains, “He's lost the spark of his life with his competing, but he gets it back. It starts in 2002 with him winning the world championships but never quite feeling he deserved it.

"Then it goes to present day, and here he is now, and he's just teaching dance students, and kind of bored with life. And he meets Jessica (Amy Smart), who is also bored with life, and they just spark something in each other and have a connection. They decide to go for it, and sparks fly.”

The film, which features Billy Zane and Caroline Rhea, had a US release of 8 May, but its UK release date hasn’t yet been confirmed.
