New videos in BSL to help and inspire deaf parents
Being a parent can be the adventure of a lifetime, but for some people it can also present many challenges. A new series of films have been created in British Sign Language (BSL) to highlight some of the issues faced by Deaf parents, inspire them to get involved in their children’s schooling and inform them of extended services that are available.
Starring and directed by Deaf parents, the BSL films profile four sets of families and are part of a wider collection of online short films and animations called ‘Everyday Adventures’. This series covers a wide range of subjects, including the availability of additional support-services in schools and how parents can play a greater part in their children’s education.
Louis’ Story
Starring in one of the films is Louis from Hillingdon, London, who has been Deaf all his life. His children, Lily-Grace 8, and Toby 6, are hearing. But this doesn’t stop Louis getting involved. In a film about their lives, we see Louis helping Lily-Grace to teach the other children in her class sign language and the positive effects that this has on everyone’s lives.
Louis notes; “Sometimes it can feel like a bit of a struggle to get involved in your kids education, especially if, like me, you’re not exactly like all the other parents. But everyone has something they can offer, and it’s so rewarding when you do.”
Matt Buttery from Dad Talk, explains why they wanted to make these films for deaf parents, "Louis’ story highlights how it can be harder for some parents to be active in their children’s school life, but how it is still possible. We believe that knowing other families are in the same boat can be really encouraging for parents.”
All films can be accessed on-line at Youtube.
The 'My Favourite Day' video can be found here and features Louis and his family. It was actually made by Louis too.
