Teacher wins top award
Melanie Potts, a 36 year-old teacher, has won a top teaching award for her work with deaf people.
She won the North West’s Teacher of the Year 2009 award following her commitment to teaching sign language and is now through to the final in London.
Melanie, who runs Tutors Direct, a team of tutors who provide British Sign Language courses across the North West, was shocked when she heard she’d won the regional heat, but was delighted about receiving the award.
Melanie’s students are extremely fond of her, calling her teaching “supportive and amusing”, whilst Signature, an organisation that promotes excellence in deaf communications, say she’s an outstanding teacher who shows “passion and commitment” to teaching sign language with her down-to-earth approach.
Melanie originally started a sign language club to bring hearing and deaf people together, and to improve understanding of deaf culture.
