Chloe wins a place at Deaf Olympics

women football.jpg A police inspector who spent 24 hours in a prison cell to raise cash for his 18-year-old footballing daughter is celebrating after she finally won a place in the team.

Graham Lockey and his daughter Chloe were disappointed when the teenager wasn't named in the Great Britain squad for this summer's Deaf Olympics, in Taiwan. The 47-year-old had even given up his freedom to spend a night in a cell at to raise the cash needed to fund the trip.

For 24 hours he was treated like a detainee, being served prisoner's meals and forced to wear prison clothing. And together with a number of fund-raising events the family, from Sunderland, raised more than £5,000 for the trip.

Chloe said: "Words can not explain how I feel. This is my dream and it has come true for me and I hope I make my country proud.

"I'm really lucky to have a father and a family who have given me such great support and helped me to achieve my dream. I just want to say thanks to them and everyone who has made this possible for me."

Chloe, who works at Gill Bridge police station in Sunderland, has been profoundly deaf since birth. She began playing football when she was six and went on to play for York College Ladies and Leeds United Deaf Ladies football teams. She also trains with England's Deaf Ladies team.
