Runner’s deaf aid

Sarah Gallagher, from Shortlands, has been training hard for the 26.2 mile race on Sunday, April 26.

The 27-year-old tutor at City Lit college in Covent Garden, has pledged to raise £1,500 for the National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS) which she hopes will help youngsters reach their 'true potential'.

She said: "Training is going well, I have completed three half-marathons and been doing lots of swimming which helps with muscle stiffness.

"My colleagues think I am mad. Some students think I am crazy for doing it, but they've wished me all the best. I'm getting lots of encouragement and I believe that I can do it.

"Since I am deaf myself, I am aware that more young deaf people feel isolated and lonely than their hearing peers.

"NCDS helps deaf teenagers reach their true potential at school, develop their self-confidence and communication skills.

"There are many benefits of running a sponsored marathon. You support a good cause, lose weight, get fit and enjoy the exceptional atmosphere along the way.

"Afterwards, you will have unforgettable memories to look back on. I might go out for a meal with friends to celebrate."

Last year, 60 people ran the London marathon in aid of NDCS.

NDCS head of events, Helen Lerwill, said: "Every day in the UK three babies are born deaf and 90 per cent are born to hearing parents with little experience of deafness.

"NDCS is the national charity dedicated to creating a world without barriers for deaf children. We are funded almost entirely through public donations. None of our work would be possible without the commitment of people like Sarah."
