Cochlear implants provide useful hearing to those who don’t benefit from hearing aids and from the early, controversial beginnings in 1989, the majority of profoundly deaf children now have implants – and can talk as they walk!

To celebrate, deaf children, adults and their families will be taking to parks to raise money for the charity The Ear Foundation. While The Ear Foundation funded the first cochlear implants in the UK, implants are now provided on NHS, and were recently endorsed by NICE. The Ear Foundation is increasingly busy, providing services to support those with implants at home, school and in work – ensuring this great technology is used to the full.

Sue Archbold, Chief Executive of The Ear Foundation said: “Twenty years ago we had no idea what the future would hold for deaf children – and now they are talking with confidence at home and school. But as the numbers grow- it’s essential that the support is there for them in the community – and this is what The Ear Foundation does.

Colin Wells, of Casualty, whose daughter had an implant after being deafened by a virus said: “ it’s truly a miracle – this has given our daughter back.”
