Heroic tabby Libby makes 'top ten animal stories of the year!'
From the 13-stone dog who thought he was a cat, to a chimp raising two tiger cubs, 2008 has been a great year for cute animal stories. The Times documented its top ten this week, and the DeafBlog was pleased to see that Libby the tabby cat made second place!
Libby, the big-hearted heroic cat stepped in as carer to ageing dog Cashew when he went blind and deaf.
The 10-year-old kitty, belonging to American couple Terry and Deb Burns, served as a 24-hour seeing-eye cat for the Labrador-Shar Pei cross, gently nudging her towards her food and away from obstacles.
She grudgingly let the dog out of her sight once a day to be walked by the Burns, but otherwise stuck to her religiously, steering her to bed at night and then snuggling down next to her.
Sadly, Cashew has now died, but in September the American RSPCA recognised Libby’s interspecies kindness, naming her Cat of the Year, 2008.
Terry Burns, from Pennsylvania, said: "Without this cat, we know Cashew would have been lost and very lonely indeed. This is one animal who knew what needed to be done and did it day in and day out for her friend."
