Deaf mum 'an inspiration'

A mum from Hemel Hempstead has become the first deaf woman to win a prestigious Woman of the Future award, the Hemel Today reported. Sabina Iqbal, 32, the founder of Deaf Parenting UK, took home the top gong in the voluntary category.

The judges said Sabina had transformed the provision of services for deaf parents. They said, "Sabina is someone who spotted a gap in service provision and had the motivation to plug it, overcoming numerous barriers to do so. We have every confidence that she will go on to do the same overseas."

Sabina collected her award at a ceremony at London Marriott Grosvenor Square that celebrated the UK's most inspirational women under 35.

A spokesman for the organisation said: "We are so proud of Sabina. She is an excellent role model and an inspiration to many women across the UK and the world. Her achievements are amazing, especially in her voluntary capacity. She enables deaf parents to have a voice in society and share models of good practice."

The charity's work is widely recognised as invaluable to the deaf community, it has recently been shortlisted for The Guardian's public services awards and took home a TalkTalk Innovation in the Community gong at a ceremony in the House of Lords.

The charity has even received support from Her Majesty The Queen and Prime Minister Gordon Brown since it was founded six years ago.

The Queen was interested to see Deaf Parenting UK's first annual report and newsletter. Her Majesty sent warm good wishes to Sabina and wished Deaf Parenting UK a successful future.

Gordon Brown said, “We recognise the significant expertise and the crucial role that practitioners such as Deaf Parenting UK have to play in helping to deliver strategies and plan high quality services for parents and their families.”
