Cochlear implants on the big screen

Cochlear implants are getting worldwide exposure thanks to new Hollywood comedy Step Brothers.

The film, starring Will Ferrell and John Reilly begins with Dale's (Reilly) father, CI surgeon Dr. Robert Doback (Richard Jenkins), giving a presentation about a new model of Cochlear Implant at a conference. Only a few seconds of the presentation are shown, and it soon ends in nonsense when the father notices his bride-to-be in the audience. However, the scene is shown again later in the film when his wife reminisces about their first meeting.

The content is a triumph for cochlear implants. Nothing was misrepresented and the film has gained CIs more exposure worldwide and in the mainstream media.

Overall, Step Brothers has received mixed-reviews, with Indie London describing it as 'hopelessly juvenile, but capable of appealing to everyone’s inner child.'
