Children's cochlear implant books

Abby.jpg There has been a surge in the publishing industry when it comes to children's books that talk about cochlear implants.

‘Abby gets a cochlear implant’, written by Maureen Cassidy Riski, illustrates the process of how Abby gets a cochlear implant. The story shows that Abby has a hearing loss and wears purple hearing aids, then has a progressive hearing loss and her family chooses a cochlear implant.

The story goes on to describe hearing testing, an introduction to cochlear implants, and the steps a family would take to explore this option of habilitation for their child who has a hearing loss.

Another book, called ‘Rally caps’, written by Stephen J. Cutler and Jodi Cutler Del Dottore is available in English and Italian. It’s a humorous, fun-filled baseball and camp story.

Ten year-old Jordan is injured in an unfortunate and frightening accident while trying out for the Little League Travel team. Recovery is difficult. At summer camp, he struggles to conquer his anxiety and fear in order to return to his beloved game of baseball. He forms a friendship with a deaf Italian boy, Luca, who wears a cochlear implant. Luca’s positive ‘nothing is impossible’ attitude, along with the inspiration he draws from his idol, Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr., gives Jordan the courage to return to baseball with a passion.

Find out what happens as “Rally Caps” are raised in the bottom of the final inning in the biggest game of Jordan’s life. Boys and girls alike will enjoy this touching story of persevering through difficult times.

A third book is ‘Ellie’s Ears’, a story from the perspective of a ten year-old deaf girl with bilateral cochlear implants! This was written by Elizabeth Boschini and released this May, in honor of ASHA’s Better Hearing and Speech Month. The author can be contacted at elliesearsbook@gmail.com.

Proceeds from book sales will benefit organisations that provide legal advocacy and financial assistance to people in need of cochlear implants and other assistive listening devices.

Hi Nicola!
I'm Jodi, the co-author of RALLY CAPS and I wanted to thank you for writing about our book on your blog. In addition to our website, I write a blog called An American Mom in Tuscany: Jordan's Cochlear Implant Story -- Raising their Voices: Inspirational Experiences in Deafness.
Check it out: http://rallycapsdotnet.blogspot.com
I will definitely add your blog to my bloglist and I look forward to reading more posts.
RALLY CAPS was recently published in Italian and we just had a huge book presentation where all Medical Professionals involved in Jordan's Journey not only were present, but spoke. It was an emotional event for all, especially my son, who played the guitar, read his letter to the reader that we added to the Italian version and spoke before a crowd of over 130.
We've come a long way from when he had difficulty introducing himself and saying his own name...
Thank you again,
Jodi
