The Right to be Deaf
Many of you will have read about the recent interviews with the deaf parents who would, if given the choice, have a deaf child, rather than a hearing child. They already have one deaf daughter and may have to have IVF to have another child, but don't want to have to choose a hearing embryo over a deaf one.
The parents comments have come about in the light of a new bill going through Parliament which could mean that embryos used in IVF treatment would have to be 'screened out' if the child would be born deaf.
This is quite a debate, and one that we felt could not be totally ignored on The Deaf Blog. We take no sides, but we would be interested in hearing your views. Many of the people reading this blog are deaf, some with cochlear implants or Bahas, some with hearing aids and many people who use sign language. No doubt many hearing people also visit The Deaf Blog.
