Successful Deaf Role Models

Children between the ages of 0 to 18 living in Northern Ireland are being given the chance to meet successful deaf adults who will share their personal experiences of growing up deaf.

The scheme is being organised by The National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS) which has extended its unique Deaf Role Model project, which is free to join.

Deaf adults from all walks of life have been recruited and trained by the NDCS so that young people and their families can work with a role model who reflects their own situation. Up to now, they have only been able to visit families in their homes, but thanks to the extended service, visits will now be organised to local groups, NDCS family weekends, schools, colleges and youth clubs, where role models can talk about their experiences.

If you are a parent of a deaf child or young person aged 18 or under, the NDCS can arrange a visit in your home. Or if you are a professional working with deaf children or young people aged 18 or under, they can arrange a visit in your place of work. For more information please contact Valerie Copenhagen, Deaf Role Model Co-ordinator tel: 020 7490 8656 (voice or text) deafrolemodel@ndcs.org.uk

Dear Sir or Madam

I am a deaf student doing a MA Deaf Education course at Leeds University; I'm planning to do a critical study based on Deaf Role Models in mainstream schools. I would be grateful if you give me information about Deaf Role Models including schools.

Thank you

Kind regards

Elaine
