Big MG the Deafblind DJ

Michael Gerwat, 58, told us his story as a guest writer on the DeafBlog in June last year. Despite being born blind, Michael loved music and in 1968 trained as a piano turner, working backstage with legends like Elton John and Genesis. Then, in 1989, he started to go deaf, and within six months lost all of his hearing. Life was pretty grim for Michael, who, for two and a half years could only communicate through hand language.

Then, in 1992, Michael was given a cochlear implant and a second implant in 2002. Now, Michael is known as something of a music buff, and his story has been picked up by The Guardian newspaper! Read the latest about Michael here.
