Listening to Deaf Children with Cochlear Implants
A new booklet called Young People and their Cochlear Implants has been published thanks to a unique research project funded by the National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS) and The Ear Foundation.
In the leaflet, young deaf people with cochlear implants put forward their points of view, and talk about how an implant has changed their lives. The majority of deaf young people who took part in the research project were happy with their implant and thought that it had had a positive impact on their life. A third of the young people said that the implant had improved communication with their family and friends and two thirds that it had helped them to understand lessons at school better.
Many of the young people interviewed also enjoyed the flexibility which they felt a cochlear implant offered for them to use their own spoken language, as well as sign language.
