Deafness Matters
A film has just been made with a group of young people from Oxfordshire Deaf Children's Society (ODCS) to raise awareness about deafness and how it affects people.
The young people devised drama sequences, based on their own experiences, and act out all sorts of different scenarios, such as buying a ticket at a railway station or having a driving lesson. They talk about the difficulties they have faced, like not being understood by teachers at school but also the upside of being deaf, like being able to lip read in a club where loud music is being played, much to the envy of hearing people!
It is an uplifting, funny and moving film, which encourages young people to be up front about their deafness.
The teenagers who made the film want it to be seen by as many people as possible - other hearing impaired people, or their families, but also to teachers and other hearing people, so they will begin to understand more about what it is like to be deaf.
The film is produced and directed by Erika Stevenson and a DVD can be bought from her website
