My work experience at the Cochlear Technology Centre

Hello everyone, I’m Michael Batt, a cochlear implant user of 17 years. I am in my final year of studying Design and Technology for Industry at Manchester Metropolitan University in Cheshire and I felt I had to do some work experience in the summer to make my CV stand out when applying for jobs.
I went to the Cochlear Technology Centre in Belgium. Here is the first week of the diary I kept…
Week 1
I flew in on the Sunday and had to carry on just the passport and money in a clear plastic bag because it was the week when the airports were in chaos due to the terrorist threat. However my arrival in Belgium was a lot calmer and I was greeted by the B&B lady (Reintje) in a warming way, her house was so nice and recently renovated. She was also very relieved that I could communicate well; she had a pen and paper ready just in case I couldn’t talk!! I was equally relieved that she spoke good English!
The first two days were for me to explore and settle in as it was the national holiday for Belgium, and I was shown the town by Reintje and her daughter who was friendly. I was nervous when it came to Wednesday as I had no idea where the workplace was, I got lost for a short while but then my sense of direction has always been appalling! I was shown my working area by Marcel and introduced to various colleagues. My first task was to learn how to operate Pro Engineer Wildfire, a computer aided drawing package. I had used other programs before but nothing as complex as this! So it took me the rest of the week to get used to it using online tutorials for tuition.
I was lucky that the Mannrock festival was on at the weekend and I met up with Bas (a colleague) and I was amazed at the atmosphere - I had never been to a festival before and I really liked it! It was late at night when I managed to force myself through to the front and I could feel my lungs resonating!! But what hadn’t occurred to me was that I had to get back out which took an hour!!
