Subtitles are addictive

Recent research has discovered that although TV subtitles may primarily be for deaf people, or people with hearing difficulties, six mllion hearing people are using them!

According to media regulator, Ofcom, of the 7.5 million people who use TV subtitles, six million have no hearing impairment at all.

They put it down to the fact that once you've used subtitles, its difficult to give them up - it means you can eat a bag of crisps noisily, or get the baby off to sleep without missing a word of your favourite programme.

In fact, subtitles have a bit of a cult following and the most ardent fans don't seem to mind it they deliver the punchline before the joke is over or give the answer in a quiz before you've had time to even think about it.

Take a look at the story on the BBC website here where there is loads of feedback from subtitle fans as well as people who find them really annoying
