Apple turns down the volume

Following fears that personal music players and earphones could be linked with hearing loss, Apple has introduced volume controls for iPods.

They have made a free download update available for users to set a personal maximum volume limit and parents will also be able to set a locked limit on their child's player.

This move is welcomed by the RNID. Its 'Don't Lose the Music Campaign' (www.dontlosethemusic.com) has been warning people who use personal stereos that they could be risking long term damage to their hearing by turning up the volume to levels that could cause permanent hearing loss.

However, the RNID still thinks there is a lot of work to be done to educate manufacturers and music listeners to the potential dangers of listening to personal music players with the volume turned up too high. Health experts are calling for more studies into the effect of earphones on hearing and in America, Apple is facing legal action claiming the iPod can damage hearing.
