Deaf character returns to Eastenders

Ben Mitchell, the nine-year-old son of Phil Mitchell, has returned to Eastenders. After catching meningitis early on in life, he narrowly avoided death and was left partially deaf in one ear. Charlie Jones, the hearing actor who plays Ben said: "It's brilliant - I am really looking forward to getting started."

To co-incide with Ben's return to Eastenders this spring, the National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS) has launched a new leaflet called Meningitis and childhood deafness. The leaflet is aimed at parents whose children, like Ben, have or have had meningitis and have hearing difficulties as a result.
