UK's first Freedom implant

Calum Spence was born profoundly deaf two and a half years ago. He was given a hearing aid two months later but it was of no benefit at all.

In May 2005 Calum was the first person in the UK to receive a Freedom cochlear implant at Great Ormond Street Hospital and since then his hearing has improved dramatically.

Calum's mother Nicky, a part-time NHS technical officer said: "We were told that he would bounce back quickly but to see his progress has been just incredible.

"Two weeks ago I was at the bottom of the stairs and couldn't see Calum so I shouted his name. It was the most fantastic thing to see his little head poke round the top to see who was calling him".
