My daughter's second cochlear implant - an update

By Carolyn, mum to Lily, aged 9

Things are progressing well with the new implant - though not as well as I had hoped after her meteoric start. We have another rehab session on Monday so I am hoping that, as so often happens at rehab sessions, I am shown by the professionals that Lily can do things I didn't realise she could do.
It does seem easier now for Lily to hear me and pick the correct option in 'closed set' work. It seems so natural when she gets it right. But she really has to be listening, seriously concentrating and sometimes even then she has to ask me to repeat myself three or four times.

We are doing some work where we take turns reading a list of all names of the children in her school year - this is a high interest topic for Lily! Every so often I substitute our surname - Davidson or Lily's grandparents name, McIntosh, instead of the name on the list. Sometimes it is quite bizarre - when Lily is obviously not concentrating on what I say, I can substitute Davidson for Smith and she doesn't pick it up. Other times I can see the wry smile on her lips before she turns her head and in great delight tells me exactly what I said.
She is less keen to wear her new implant, especially when she is tired. She complains it is too noisy sometimes. I really don't think it is. I have every faith in the Manchester team that mapped her. Additionally the volume doesn't seem an issue when she has a tantrum and shouts at me.
But I am increasingly catching her with the coil flicked off - she says it is more peaceful without it. Actually I would say that she flicks the old implant coil off more than ever before. I catch her with them both off. She complains that the new one makes the old one sound louder.
I asked her this morning if she would recommend having a second implant to another child like her and she thought about it and said yes. So that made me feel better about things.
